Nearly 84,000 years ago, the mega-eruption of Los Chocoyos caused the volcano's mouth to collapse, creating a gigantic caldera. Over time, rainwater filled the crater, forming Lake Atitlan and providing food, water, and life to numerous Mayan communities around the lake. On our most recent Tzuná Children's Day, children learned about this history and discussed ways to preserve the valuable ecosystem on which their communities depend.
